Macedonia vs Latvia Match Preview

Macedonia can be optimistic of competing at next year’s European Championship tournament – if not via the qualifying campaign that starts this week but through the play-offs, in which they are already guaranteed to be involved.

It may not necessarily be the most popular process with the football purists, but democrats will be happy that one of Europe’s 16 lowest-ranked nations starting the 2018-19 season will participate in Euro 2020.

One place in the tournament will be fought out by the four UEFA Nations League D group winners, namely Macedonia, Georgia, Belarus and Kosovo, unless any of that quartet qualify by right between now and November in which case another would make the step up.

It could be argued that it rewards comparative mediocracy, but at least an upwardly mobile team will get a chance to mix it with the elite at a major competition – and for their part, Macedonia can certainly be described as progressive (see stats above).

Igor Angelovski’s side are captained by veteran striker Goran Pandev and among their other star performers is midfielder Ezgjan Alioski, who is enjoying an excellent season with promotion-chasing Leeds United.

Latvia, however, look to be a much inferior side and they have tried to revive their fortunes with the appointment only last week of a new coach in Slavisa Stojanovic, who had a spell in charge of Slovenia and won the Serbian league title with Red Star Belgrade.

Stojanovic is taking a look at 28 players during this international break, but whatever line-up he fields in Skopje is unlikely to be good enough against a well-drilled Macedonia side.
