After exiting the Champions League this week, Lyon can now focus on trying to get back among Europe’s elite for next term – but there are no guarantees they will beat Montpellier.

Les Gones were gone in eight minutes from the continent’s elite club competition on Wednesday when, still in with a chance at 2-1 down to Barcelona, they conceded three quick goals to extinguish their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

But Bruno Genesio’s side are on course to fill the third position in Ligue 1 which they also occupied at the end of last season, although in-form Marseille are closing up on them rapidly.

Montpellier, however, will be no pushovers here. The shock 2012 French champions are in with a real chance of qualifying for the Europa League as they sit seventh in the table and their only defeat in the last six away games came against champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Michel Der Zakarian’s team drew away to second-placed Lille last month and performed a smash-and-grab raid to win 2-1 at Bordeaux the last time they hit the road.

With the last three league meetings between these clubs having been drawn, there looks to be real value in keeping Montpellier on side here and their recent away record also suggests they could be capable of pulling off an upset.
