Two teams without permanent managers at the time of writing resolve their FA Cup tie with a daunting fourth-round trip to Chelsea awaiting the winners.

The original game was drawn 0-0 and Sheffield Wednesday, as you would expect from a team a division above their opponents, were the better side without creating too many chances.

That proved to be the last game in charge of Luton for Nathan Jones, who just a few days later had been appointed as Stoke City’s new manager with the minimum of fuss in succession to Gary Rowett.

On Friday morning, several names were being linked with the Hatters, who are automatic promotion contenders in League One. They included Roberto Martinez’s former assistant and current West Brom No 2 Graeme Jones, ex-Shrewsbury and Ipswich boss Paul Hurst and Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson.

Sheffield Wednesday are also waiting for their next manager to get his feet under the table because Steve Bruce will not start work until February 1 as he is fulfilling a pre-arranged family commitment. His trusty allies Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew are holding the fort.

With neither of these teams conceding many goals at present, at least before the weekend, this could be another tight contest that goes all the way to penalties – but if we had to come down on one side or the other, it would be Luton to book a visit to Stamford Bridge.
