Luton Town vs Rochdale Match Preview
Nothing seems to be capable of stopping Luton Town from winning second successive promotions this season. The Bedfordshire outfit won promotion from League Two in second place behind Accrington Stanley last season and have clearly carried plenty of momentum from that campaign into the new one as they currently sit top of the third tier table with a five point gap over second placed Barnsley and a seven point gap over Sunderland who occupy third place.
Despite the recent departure of popular manager Nathan Jones to Championship outfit Stoke City, the Hatters have continued their magnificent form under club legend Mick Harford and they’ll be hoping to convince him to stay beyond the end of the campaign if their current 21 game unbeaten league run continues to fire them towards promotion. They should face few problems in overcoming Rochdale here at 42/100 with William Hill.
Rochdale are enduring a desperate season at the bottom of the League One table. Last year, the Dale won the hearts of the nation with their magnificent cup performances against Millwall and Tottenham Hotspur and with their dramatic last-day escape of the relegation zone. This year however, they’ve been unable to kick on and their chances of remaining in the third tier for much longer appear to be diminishing week on week.
Last weekend’s 5-1 mauling at the hands of Plymouth Argyle means Keith Hill’s men have picked up just one win in their last eleven League One fixtures and it saw the Greater Manchester side slip into the relegation zone. They have managed to upset the odds away from home a few times this season though and their last two victories in the league have come on the road but a win here seems highly unlikely at 13/2 with Bet365.
This match should be something of a foregone conclusion for Luton. They’re the most in-form team in the division and deservedly sit top of the table and after serving up huge victories over the likes of Wycombe, Shrewsbury and Peterborough in recent weeks they should face few problems against the leakiest defence in the division. The Dale have conceded nine times in their last two games and we’re backing a few more goals here, with Luton -2 at 3/1 with William Hill.
James Collins is the obvious goal threat in this Luton outfit with no fewer than 19 league goals to his name so far this term. However, January signing George Moncur is the man who catches my eye in the anytime goalscorer market. The 25 year old has eased right into his new role in the centre of the Hatters midfield, finding the net four times in his last five outings.
