Liverpool vs Watford Match Preview
Nigel Pearson is the man tasked with the challenge of preventing this match from being as one-sided as the form book suggests it should be – and indeed has been in the last three seasons.
The former Leicester boss has become Watford’s third manager of this campaign, appointed until the end of the season in the hope that he can lift the Hornets out of relegation trouble like he did with the Foxes in 2014-15 – sparking the momentum that carried them to the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri next time around.
It could not be a more difficult start for Pearson and not only because this game is top versus bottom, with a massive 37 points separating these clubs already. In addition, Watford have a terrible record at Anfield in the last few years.
Even when there was much less of a gap between the teams, Liverpool compiled a 16-1 aggregate winning margin over Watford in their last three meetings on Merseyside, so goodness knows what the potential is to occur this weekend.
Anfield is an absolute fortress now (see stats above) and Jurgen Klopp’s side are unstoppable, although after this contest they face horrendous fixture congestion with eight matches in four different competitions within 20 days.
This one should be ticked off successfully, however, before that hectic spell begins on Tuesday and even if Pearson’s arrival ultimately has the desired effect at Watford, he looks unlikely to start turning the tide at the first time of asking.
