Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Tottenham gave themselves a boost this week before seeking revenge for their Champions League Final defeat, but are still expected to be second best again when they visit the clear Premier League leaders.
Liverpool became European champions for the sixth time when they triumphed 2-0 against Spurs in Madrid at the end of last season, getting the better of a very ordinary game in which both teams looked jaded a couple of weeks after a gruelling campaign had drawn to a close.
Since then, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have appeared to be suffering a hangover for their form, especially recently, had left the manager clinging to his job. But suddenly they fired again on Tuesday as they put five goals without reply past Red Star Belgrade to get back on course to qualify for the Champions League knockout phase.
Yet Spurs remain without an away win in any competition this term and in the Premier League, remarkably, since January – and it looks highly unlikely they will end both of those sequences by beating a Liverpool side seeking a 12th consecutive league victory at Anfield.
No longer can the Reds equal the record number of successive Premier League victories as that chance disappeared in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United. But on their own pitch they remain irresistible and are averaging over three goals scored per match since their ongoing run of Anfield league wins began back in February.
However, all four of Liverpool’s visitors in the Premier League this season have scored a goal and that should remain the case against Tottenham, who are expected to put up a decent fight with some self-belief now restored before ultimately falling short.
