Liverpool will be hoping history repeats itself when they face Porto in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the second season running.

The Reds ousted the Portuguese club on the way to last year’s final in Kiev, albeit a round earlier than this quarter-final tie, and now try to do the same as they target this term’s showdown in Madrid.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side will want to fare better than the 0-0 draw at Anfield they played out with the Dragons, although that scoreline did not matter because the hard work had been done away from home in the first leg.

The Premier League leaders will instead be eyeing a repeat of the 5-0 triumph they registered in Porto which rendered the return match a formality, with Sadio Mane starring on that occasion with a hat-trick.

Porto, who are in a straight fight with Benfica to retain their domestic title, are in similarly strong form now compared with 12 months ago and although they beat Roma in the first knockout round, they have not done anything to suggest they can gain revenge on Liverpool.

It would be a shock if the English club failed to reach the semi-finals and they are expected to take a healthy lead to Portugal for next week’s second leg and with a clean sheet to boot.
