Liverpool vs Flamengo Match Preview
Liverpool are hot favourites to celebrate Christmas as world champions – but must achieve something they have never managed to do in a trio of previous attempts.
This is the fourth occasion when the Reds have represented Europe in the quest to be crowned the best club side on the planet. The other three times, they went up against South American opposition in the decider and were beaten without scoring a goal.
Finding the net would be a start, but more importantly Jurgen Klopp’s team want to bring home the trophy to add it to the Champions League before resuming the search for their Holy Grail…the Premier League, and they are well on the way to achieving that in 2020.
But Liverpool made hard work of reaching this final, looking set for extra time against Mexican outfit Monterrey on Wednesday with the score 1-1 until Roberto Firmino popped up right at the end to steer home a winner that was priceless – because Flamengo already had an extra day to recover.
The Copa Libertadores holders had won 3-1 against Asian champions Al-Hilal the previous day, with Uruguay international attacking midfielder Giorgian De Arrascaeta equalising before Bruno Henrique and an own goal wrapped it up for the Brazilians.
For Liverpool, the fear is that they may be starting to creak a little. Key men Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum were absentees on Wednesday due to illness and injury respectively, Jordan Henderson had to play as a centre-half and we think Flamengo are worth keeping on side here to at least take the match into extra time.
