Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has plenty of history with Bayern Munich, including in the Champions League, and will be extra determined to get through this opening knockout tie.
Bayern were, of course, the arch-rivals to Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund side when they were going head-to-head for Germany’s trophies during his reign with BVB from 2008-15.
The battles also extended to the Champions League and specifically the 2013 final at Wembley, where Arjen Robben’s late winner broke the hearts of Klopp and his team and ensured Bayern stayed on course for the Treble.
That was the first of two Champions League finals in six years that Klopp lost, with the second being last season, of course, when Liverpool were beaten by Real Madrid in Kiev.
This is undoubtedly one of the most mouthwatering ties in the round-of-16 and the bookmakers generally have Liverpool as slight favourites to qualify, although the Reds are a much shorter price than Bayern in the outright odds to lift the trophy.
These clubs’ domestic fortunes have diverged somewhat this season in the sense that Liverpool have taken a step up to become serious challengers for the Premier League title whereas Bayern are in danger of losing their crown to Dortmund.
A significant factor here could be that Liverpool’s star defender Virgil van Dijk is suspended and likely to be a bigger miss than Thomas Muller’s absence for Bayern due to the same reason.
Liverpool won all of their three home matches in the group stage, including against Paris Saint-Germain, but Bayern have shown signs recently that they are getting back into top gear and are fancied to ensure the tie heads back to Munich all-square.
