Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview
For all of Liverpool’s domestic dominance, the runaway league leaders have stuttered in recent European fixtures (see Carlo Ancelotti and Napoli) – a stat Atletico will be lapping up ahead of this March’s second-leg.
Los Colchoneros proved to be a thorn in Klopp’s high-flying system at the Wanda Metropolitano, not three weeks prior when Saul Niguez’s early goal put the hosts a goal up. In typical Diego Simeone style, what followed was a complete shut-up-shop tactic, keeping the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino at bay long enough to claim the three points.
This March’s tie at Anfield fares up to be a completely different ballgame. The obvious reasons fall in line with last season’s Champions League comeback under the lights against Barcelona where the Reds clawed their way back from the precipice of elimination to force La Liga’s finest out the European door on their way to a sixth Champions League title. While this particular scoreline might not reflect that game, Klopp’s men will need to perform similar heroics to keep their opponents out of the scoring action while they do the business themselves.
The other glaring reason is Liverpool’s record at Anfield, where they have never lost a European knockout tie under Klopp.
Indeed, the fortress that is Anfield has played host to many a historic Champions League games down the years, paired with a wall of red banners and the cacophonous singing Kop. Combine this with the Red’s gegenpressing, attack-dominant starting XI and the chances of another comeback that the likes of Gerrard and Xabi Alonso would be proud of, are more than likely.
