Lille are looking for a return to the Champions League this season, which is quite stunning given the struggles they’ve faced over the last few seasons. The Northern side finished just one point and one place above the relegation play-off position last season and they’ve been through no fewer than seven managers since Rene Girard left the club in 2015 as they have struggled to live up to the high standards set by a long-awaited title win in 2011.
This season however has been the Dogues best so far since that title win and although PSG are unsurprisingly running away with the league title, Christophe Galtier appears to be getting the best out of his side now and they come into this weekend’s round of fixtures knowing that a win in this Friday night fixture will lift them into second place. Amiens have been one of the stories of the French leagues in the last few years. The club were not even a professional outfit until 1993 and since then they rose through the divisions before eventually earning their first ever promotion to the top tier in 2017 in dramatic circumstances thanks to a last minute winning goal against Reims before finishing in a comfortable 13th position in their first campaign at the top tier.
Although steering clear of the relegation zone was a relatively easy job for Les Licornes last season, this term it looks as though they may have more of a fight on their hands. As things stand they sit in 17th place, just one point and one place above the relegation play-off spot and after picking up just one win in their last seven Ligue 1 fixtures, things don’t look like changing any time soon. A quick glance at the league table should show you the difference in class between these two sides and with the home advantage les Dogues shouldn’t face too much resistance here. Amiens have struggled for goals of late too, drawing blanks in four of their last six games in all competitions.
