Liechtenstein vs Greece Match Preview
Liechtenstein were one of the teams that will have been hoping to benefit from playing some teams of a similar standard in the UEFA Nations League last year but they still managed to finish bottom of their four team League D group, picking up just four points from an available 18. A home win over Gibraltar and draw with Armenia were the only bright spots in an otherwise uninspiring effort from the Blue-Reds.
It’s hardly surprising how much the tiny principality, with a population of less than 40,000, struggles against the footballing heavyweights of Europe and it’s hardly surprising that they are expected to finish rock-bottom of the pile in their next qualifying venture where they will come up against the likes of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy in the fight to reach Euro 2020. First up though, they take on Greece, where a shock home victory is available at 18/1 with William Hill.
Greece failed to qualify for last summer’s World Cup after a difficult few years for a nation that once shocked the whole football world by winning the Euro 2004 competition in Portugal. After managing to make it beyond the group stages at both Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup but since then Claudio Ranieri, Kostas Tsanas, Sergio Markarian have all spent short-lived and ill-fated spells in charge, trying to get the side back to the levels shown earlier in the decade.
It was a mixed bag of a group stages in the UEFA Nations League for Ethniki too as they finished third in their four-team group, ahead of Estonia but behind Hungary and Finland in their League C group. New boss Angelos Anastasiadis was installed in October and has so far picked up one win and one defeat in his first two games but his side are huge favourites to earn the three points from this qualifying clash at 1/7 with Bet365.
Greece struggled somewhat on the road in the UEFA Nations League so although we can see them easily grinding out the win against a poor Liechtenstein outfit, they could encounter some problems on the way. The Red-Blues have shown some more quality going forward in recent games, only failing to score in one of their last six matches, so we can see the value in the away win and both teams to score bet in this game at odds of 11/4 with William Hill.
Kostas Mitroglou will be best remembered by Premier League fans for his unsuccessful spell at Fulham, but the Greek forward has always been a threat for his country, scored 17 times so far in his international career. The Galatasaray forward should have too much quality for this Liechtenstein backline and that’s why we’re backing him to score at any time at odds of 8/11 with Bet365.
