It’s a symbol of Claude Puel’s ‘meh’ factor that he is favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job even though his Leicester side are best of the rest outside the big six.
Puel is undoubtedly a safe pair of hands. He will establish his clubs in the top half of the table, perhaps even get them to a cup final like he did with Southampton, but take them up to the next level? Probably not.
Leicester, of course, know what Claudio Ranieri achieved instantly. The bar was raised sky-high with their stunning Premier League triumph and Puel is understandably struggling to get anywhere near that level of success.
And it does not help your job prospects when your team exits the FA Cup against a League Two club, like the Foxes did at Newport last weekend.
They are warm favourites to beat Southampton, with the jury still very much out on Saints’ new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl whose start has been decidedly mixed. If you had to lean one way or the other, you would say Southampton are a slightly improved side for his arrival.
Both teams are hit and miss with Leicester having lost at home to Cardiff recently, and the best value here looks to be in backing a draw – which Southampton have achieved on their last three league and cup trips to this ground.
