If any club is well placed to target the FA Cup this season it is Leicester – and their bid should begin with a routine victory at home to Wigan.

With no European football to distract them and a 14-point cushion bolstering their position in the Premier League’s top four, Leicester may as well have a right go at trying to reach Wembley and adding this famous old trophy to the English title they captured in 2016.

Manager Brendan Rodgers certainly has a deep enough squad to do it. He rang the changes last Saturday away to West Ham and a largely second-string side won 2-1, so the Foxes could go a long way in this competition if they can avoid Liverpool and Manchester City in the draw.

They certainly cannot complain about their third-round tie because opponents Wigan, who lifted the FA Cup in 2013, are struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table and again find themselves in a relegation battle – they dropped out of their current division in both 2015 and 2017 before immediately bouncing back each time.

The main problem for the Latics is that they simply do not score enough goals, having bagged two or more in only six of their 26 league matches so far this season.

With Leicester having a defensive record that befits their present status as the country’s second best team, we expect them to keep a clean sheet here and show they mean business in the FA Cup with a routine yet decisive success.
