Leicester City vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Newcastle are the only club to inflict defeat upon Brendan Rodgers as Leicester manager at the King Power Stadium – but history looks unlikely to repeat itself on Sunday.
A goal in April from Ayoze Perez, whom Leicester went on to sign from Newcastle for £30million this summer, is the only reason why Rodgers is not undefeated with the Foxes on their own pitch – and most recently, last weekend, they came from behind to win 2-1 there against Tottenham in a contest heavily influenced by VAR.
The way Leicester have started this season it would be a surprise if Newcastle beat them again. Rodgers’ side began the weekend third in the table, with just a solitary and narrow defeat away to Manchester United, and they are looking very much like a team who could be playing European football next term.
Leicester have already got the better of the Magpies once in 2019-20, beating them on penalties at St James’ Park in the Carabao Cup, a competition in which they are now through to the last 16 after a 4-0 trouncing of Luton this week.
Newcastle have just one victory to their credit, albeit an excellent one at Tottenham, and their limitations have been exposed by drawing their last two home games against Brighton and Watford, both of whom they could find themselves in a relegation battle with this season.
Quite frankly, we see this being a comfortable afternoon for Leicester, whose squad strength in depth is now impressive, and there may not be much for Newcastle’s potential new owners to enthuse about if they are watching.
