Leicester City vs Aston Villa Match Preview
Two of the more successful clubs in League Cup history have an opportunity to enhance their strong record in this competition, with a place in the final awaiting the winner of this tie.
Aston Villa and Leicester have lifted the trophy eight times between them, with a combined five other appearances in the Wembley showdown, putting them both in the top eight on the roll of honour along with this season’s other semi-finalists, Manchester duo City and United.
So it has been a real horses-for-courses edition and now Leicester are red-hot favourites to turn the clock back a couple of decades by reaching another final, having done so three times in four years from 1997-2000, lifting the trophy on the first and last of those occasions.
By a quirk of fate and the football calendar, the first leg of each Carabao Cup semi-final is taking place exactly a calendar month after those teams met in their first Premier League head-to-head of the campaign, albeit at the reverse venue. And both were away wins, Leicester triumphing 4-1 at Villa Park with Jamie Vardy scoring the first and last goals.
The Foxes can afford to have a serious crack at both cups as they have a 14-point buffer in the Premier League top four and no European football to distract them, whereas Villa are fighting a relegation battle and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham at the weekend.
Essentially, Leicester look to have everything going for them in this semi-final, being back on track following an indifferent spell in the run up to Christmas, and while Villa may well keep themselves in the tie, Brendan Rodgers’ side are backed to edge closer towards Wembley.
