Legia Warsaw vs Rangers Match Preview
Rangers have made a terrific start to the 2019-20 season but face probably their most difficult test so far in trying to get past Legia Warsaw to reach the Europa League group stage again.
The Gers won five of their six warm-up friendly matches to nil, drew the other 1-1 against Blackburn and have kept up the good work in the competitive action, winning eight out of nine so far plus a 0-0 away stalemate which comfortably secured Europa League progress.
Steven Gerrard’s side have eased through three UEFA ties against progressively trickier opponents from Gibraltar, Luxembourg and Denmark but Legia Warsaw may be a cut above those teams – not least because they have a superb defensive record just now.
The Polish side have played 10 competitive matches this season and kept eight clean sheets. They started at the opening hurdle of this competition like Rangers did and have beaten opponents from Gibraltar, Finland and Greece – each of them without conceding a goal.
Of course, it’s only three years ago that Legia were drawing 3-3 with Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage and while they are not quite the same force now, they appear to be very solid at the back under their Serbian manager Aleksandar Vukovic.
Although Rangers won a 4-2 thriller away to Midtjylland in the previous round, goals are expected to be in much shorter supply here and we think Legia may just sneak a win to set up the tie perfectly for the return match at Ibrox next week.
