Latvia vs Slovenia Match Preview
Group G is among the weakest and most open qualifying pools for Euro 2020 and this match presents Slovenia with a good chance to boost their prospects of making it to the tournament.
With Austria having made a disappointing start to the campaign, the door was opened to the likes of Slovenia, Israel and Macedonia to carry the fight to red-hot favourites Poland in the quest for the two automatic qualification places.
In all honesty, a bigger game for Slovenia was Friday’s away to Austria (result not known at the time of writing). Even avoiding defeat there would have been a positive for Matjaz Kek’s side, albeit they had not won a competitive fixture since September 2017.
The problem for Slovenia has been too many draws, specifically 1-1, which was the scoreline that all of their five Nations League and Euro 2020 qualifying games between October 16 and the end of March finished.
Latvia, meanwhile, appear to be the makeweights in this group and before they hosted Israel on Friday, their trajectory was not one of a team that looked like they would be challenging to reach the finals of a major competition any time soon.
Slovenia, for all their recent frustrations, still look a superior outfit to Latvia and are backed to give their qualification hopes a significant fillip.
