Kilmarnock vs Rangers Match Preview
These clubs begin the 2019-20 Scottish Premiership season exactly the same way they finished the last one – but Kilmarnock have undergone a significant change since then.
It’s only 11 weeks since Killie won 2-1 at home to Rangers to secure an excellent third position in the table and give manager Steve Clarke the ideal send-off before taking the Scotland job, which was reward for his excellent 19-month spell at the club.
Kilmarnock have appointed Angelo Alessio as Clarke’s successor, the 54-year-old Italian taking his first managerial role since 2008 having been assistant to Antonio Conte with Juventus, Italy and Chelsea since then.
But a decision by Killie that appeared to carry a certain amount of risk has already been called into question because Alessio’s first test, a Europa League qualifying tie against Welsh club Connah’s Quay Nomads, ended in an embarrassing exit after a 2-0 home defeat.
Rangers, in contrast, continue to go from strength to strength and could really challenge their arch-rivals Celtic this term. They are showing ambition in the transfer market and their pre-season results, as well as in the Europa League qualifiers, have been excellent.
A couple of factors are against the Glasgow giants here, however – they have a poor recent record at Rugby Park (see stats above) and were in Luxembourg for a Europa League game on Thursday. Alessio has had two-and-a-half weeks to get things right at Killie since the Connah’s Quay debacle and is given this chance to show he is a worthy successor to Clarke.
