Kilmarnock vs Rangers Match Preview
Steve Clarke is set to bid farewell to Kilmarnock at the end of this game to become Scotland manager – and will be keen to bow out with a performance befitting of his time at the club.
Friday was reported to be D-Day for the Scottish FA in appointing a successor to Alex McLeish and three names were in the frame – Clarke, Scotland Under-21 coach Scot Gemmill and Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, whose club were none too keen to let him go.
The overwhelming favourite at the time of writing was Clarke, who admitted “the inside of my head is like a tumble dryer” as he chewed over the next move in a managerial career that has been revitalised by his time at Rugby Park – a return to England, where his family lives, was another mooted possibility.
Kilmarnock have improved massively under Clarke and if they beat Rangers to be sure of finishing third in the Premiership, they will enter the Europa League qualifiers for the first time since 2001-02 regardless of whether Celtic or Hearts win the Scottish Cup Final.
Rangers, meanwhile, cut Celtic’s lead at the top of the table to six points with last week’s Old Firm success, which sent out a message for next season as well as extending their current sequence of consecutive victories to six.
But one of Clarke’s biggest plus points during his 19-month spell with Killie has been a strong record against Rangers and if this does prove to be his swansong, he can leave on another positive result.
