Juventus surrendered a winning position in their Champions League opener but are expected to make no mistake when they host Bayer Leverkusen on match-day two.
The eight-times-consecutive Italian champions received a very tough start in their latest quest to conquer Europe, travelling to Atletico Madrid to launch their Group D campaign, and all looked to be going swimmingly when they went two goals up through Juan Cuadrado and Blaise Matuidi.
But Atletico hit back to force a 2-2 draw with set-piece goals from Stefan Savic and Hector Herrera, although the result was one that, before kick-off, Juventus would not have been too disappointed with.
It was still considerably better than what Bayer Leverkusen achieved two weeks ago because they lost 2-1 at home to Lokomotiv Moscow and as that was expected to be their ‘easiest’ game in the group, it has clearly done plenty of damage to their qualification prospects.
The main positive here for Bayer is that they have recovered well from that setback with a couple of decisive wins in the Bundesliga, where they are only one point off the top of what is a very congested early table.
However, Juventus are in their usual imperious form and with Cristiano Ronaldo continuing to fire in the goals, it would be a surprise if the kings of Serie A failed to get a first Champions League win this term on the board here.
