Italy Under-21 vs Spain Under-21 Match Preview
Two of the ‘big five’ in the betting for the 2019 European Under-21 Championship meet in the highlight of the opening day’s action – and they are also comfortably the most successful countries in the competition’s 41-year history.
The stats above illustrate how Italy and Spain have outshone all of their rivals at this level, with no other nation having even reached three victories never mind their respective five and four.
Their paths have crossed plenty of times too, with Spain winning the semi-final meeting 3-1 in Krakow two years ago before losing the showdown to Germany – and they also triumphed against Italy in the 2013 final in Jerusalem.
This time, Italy have home advantage and that means they did not have to qualify. They and Spain are among five teams separated by just one point at the head of the outright betting market, the others being England, France and Germany.
They will both, therefore, be expected to advance from Group A at the expense of Belgium and Poland, who meet in the curtain-raiser earlier on Sunday.
Though Italy’s friendly-match results in the last couple of years have not been the best, they have an experienced manager in Luigi Di Biagio who has been in charge for six years and he is backed to have got his squad to peak at the right time in front of a sell-out Bologna crowd.
