Israel vs Slovenia Match Preview
Two countries who will hope to challenge the two favourites in Euro 2020 Qualifying Group G go head-to-head on match day one – and we are backing the spoils to be shared in Haifa.
Poland and Austria are the nations the bookmakers expect to claim the two places available at next year’s tournament from this pool, but it looks one of the more open sections and neither of those teams has been in particularly sparkling form of late.
Therefore an opportunity could emerge for either or both of Israel and Slovenia, although they also must produce a more consistent run of positive results to fight for a top-two placing.
In the inaugural UEFA Nations League in the autumn Israel held their own in the third of the four tiers, missing out on promotion when they lost their final match away to Scotland. They will be encouraged here, however, by the fact that their recent home form has been strong.
Slovenia, meanwhile, were relegated to the bottom division having lost their first three games narrowly, but then they finished with three straight 1-1 draws including away to Bulgaria.
Since then, Slovenia have appointed a new manager in Matjaz Kek who most recently enjoyed Croatian league and cup double success with Rijeka two years ago.
Kek’s fresh approach could derive improvement and with Huddersfield Town’s Jon Gorenc Stankovic among the players he has called up, Slovenia could well be capable of continuing their sequence of stalemates to kick off this qualifying campaign.
