Inter Milan may not be able to compete with Juventus and their dominance of the Italian top tier as they look to end a long wait to add another Scudetto to their honours list, but the Nerazzurri have at least returned to the top few positions in the table in the last few years. They managed to finish in the Champions League spots thanks to their league performances last year and as things stand they sit in 3rd place and look a good bet for another top four finish this term.
After starting the Champions League group stages with a comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur, Luciano Spalletti’s men will have been so disappointed to not progress alongside Barcelona but instead they ended up in 3rd place in the group and as such have entered the Europa League. Rapid Vienna managed to qualify through the group stages of what was a very tightly-contested Europa League group stage. The Austrian outfit may have lost their opening two away games but they eventually managed to do just enough to see off the challenge of Rangers and Spartak Moscow to qualify in second place of Group G alongside Spanish side Villarreal although their future in the competition is hanging by a thread after that home defeat last week.
The domestic season has been very poor for die Grun-Wießen as they find themselves struggling down in eighth place with 18 games on the board, which must be highly disappointing for a club that has won the title on no fewer than 32 occasions throughout their history. League action gets underway agin next week but for now they’ll be concentrating on trying to upset the odds in the Europa League with an unlikely away win here at 9/1 with Betfair.
Inter Milan have looked strong defensively recently, conceding just two goals across their last four games and keeping a clean sheet in Austria in the first leg of this Round of 32 Europa League tie. Rapid Vienna have not looked themselves going forward all season, particularly away from home and against a strong backline that includes the experienced Stefan de Vrij and Samir Handanovic we see them failing to score here.
