Former striker Thomas Doll begins life as Hannover coach aiming to get his new team scoring goals again, which would boost their chances of avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga.

Doll initially represented East Germany internationally before the country was reunified and was a very effective marksman in the 1980s and 1990s before turning his hand to management, his longest spell being five years with Hungarian club Ferencvaros.

Now the 52-year-old has replaced Andre Breitenreiter with Hannover second from bottom of the Bundesliga table and needing to improve significantly if they are to avoid embellishing their reputation as a yo-yo club with what would be a second demotion in four years.

But a record of 13 defeats in their last 18 games, and only three goals scored in the latest seven of those, is not encouraging especially when facing an RB Leipzig side who are on course to return to the Champions League by finishing in the top four.

The club managed by Ralf Rangnick, who will have Hoffenheim’s Julian Nagelsmann in charge next term, dished out a 4-0 thrashing to Fortuna Dusseldorf away from home last weekend and have responded well to the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Europa League knockout stage to Celtic.

Whether Doll can get Hannover upwardly mobile over the rest of the campaign remains to be seen, but this is a tough introduction for him and Leipzig are expected to emerge as comfortable winners.
