Hamilton suffered a potentially costly defeat at St Mirren on Monday which leaves them in serious jeopardy of having to contest the Scottish Premiership relegation play-off.
The Accies lost 2-0 in Paisley and even though their fate remains in their own hands, Saturday’s final round of matches in the bottom half of the table suggests they have their work cut out to stay above St Mirren.
At least Hamilton are at home, but to a seventh-placed St Johnstone team who have now amassed more points this term than Hearts in sixth – albeit the last eight of their total of 52 were against bottom-half opponents and their position in the standings cannot change.
The worry for Hamilton is that if St Mirren gain more points than them on Saturday they will exchange places, and the Buddies visit relegated Dundee who have won only once at home all season.
Brian Rice will be encouraged that his Hamilton side have lost only one of their seven home matches under his guidance since replacing Martin Canning at the end of January.
St Johnstone’s away form in 2019 has been poor, but they are still 22 points clear of their hosts in the table and that supremacy suggests they can leave Hamilton worrying about what is happening in Dundee.
