Guingamp’s cup results have been far superior to their league form this season, but we expect them to suffer their first defeat in a knockout competition against Lyon.

The club from Brittany are four points adrift at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table and in serious danger of relegation after a six-year stay in the top flight.

But the cups have been offering some welcome respite from those struggles for Guingamp.

Not only have they come through two away ties to reach the last 16 of the Coupe de France but they are also into the League Cup Final against Strasbourg, having knocked out Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco plus two other Ligue 1 rivals!

The question now is whether the bandwagon can keep rolling for Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side to add another big scalp to their collection in the shape of Lyon, who of course are through to the Champions League round-of-16 in which they will face Barcelona.

Lyon are in excellent form right now, however, having won four straight games – three of them away from home followed by a 2-1 triumph over PSG on Sunday.

The cup has certainly been a great leveller for Guingamp this term, but we suspect their luck may be about to run out and Lyon are fancied to score at least a couple of goals in advancing to the last eight of the Coupe de France.
