Girona vs Villarreal Match Preview
Villarreal’s hopes of going all the way in this season’s Europa League suffered a blow this week – and so might their chances of staying in the Spanish top flight on Sunday.
The Yellow Submarine’s strong European campaign has been at odds with their La Liga form because they entered this weekend in the relegation zone due to their inferior head-to-head record against Real Valladolid, with whom they were level on points.
But perhaps Javier Calleja’s side will be able to focus solely on staying up after next Thursday when they begin the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final away to their local rivals Valencia trailing 3-1 on aggregate, leaving them as clear outsiders to progress.
Following an initial good run of form after Calleja returned at the end of January for his second spell in charge, Villarreal have now lost three of their last four games and drew the other – although in fairness they so nearly hung on for a famous win over Barcelona until conceding two late goals for a 4-4 stalemate.
Girona are four points above Villarreal in the table and they will see this match as a great opportunity to take a big stride towards securing a third consecutive top-flight campaign.
The home form of Eusebio Sacristan’s side is a worry (see stats above) but they have reeled off three good away wins in the last couple of months, including at Real Madrid, and may just be able to beat opponents who could be compromised by their Europa League distraction.
