Girona vs Barcelona Match Preview
Barcelona have been shaky away from home in the Copa del Rey recently, but their league form is superb and they are expected to gain another emphatic win on the short journey to Girona.
The Spanish champions will have to overturn a deficit at Camp Nou for the second consecutive round if they want to lift the King’s Cup for a record fifth consecutive time after losing 2-0 at Sevilla on Wednesday.
But when their big guns such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Ousmane Dembele play, they are a completely different proposition and last weekend’s 3-1 win against Leganes made it seven league victories in succession.
Back in the early autumn, Girona achieved a terrific 2-2 draw at Camp Nou when Barcelona had defender Clement Lenglet sent off in the 35th minute.
But now, the club nicknamed the Blanquivermell are looking over their shoulder at an increasingly tight relegation battle even though they went into the weekend only just below halfway in the table.
The problem is that Girona have not won in the league since November and they are in the midst of a daunting week because this game is sandwiched between the two legs of their Copa del Rey quarter-final against Real Madrid.
Messi has played only 26 minutes of Barcelona’s last two games, with Ernesto Valverde clearly wanting him as fresh as possible for the business end of the campaign, and he is sure to be chomping at the bit to deliver another three points for La Liga leaders.
