Gillingham vs Sunderland Match Preview
Sunderland travel to Gillingham for their Matchday 20 clash just two weeks after seeing a 1st Round FA Cup loss at this ground, when Brandon Hanlan’s extra-time winner made all the difference. Phil Parkinson obviously struggled to make an impact and now has to hope for more, as his men look to put an underwhelming streak behind them with just one win in nine outings since late October.
Black Cats shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw against Coventry and saw Burton Albion (1-2) snatch all three points since, where defensive inconsistency proved costly at Stadium of Light as well. They have been conceding on the regular when away from home, which will be just as worrying now.
Gillingham have enjoyed quite a contrasting spell of form lately and they now come into the match with four wins earned in five outings, only seeing AFC Wimbledon (1-0) interrupt the streak. They sit five points behind 11th placed Sunderland and catching up will be the task in their minds on the day.
Gills outclassed Doncaster (3-0) here last week as Mark Byrne, Oliver Lee, and Brandon Hanlan all made it on the scoresheet. This promises them in good spirits too but Steve Evans’ men still have a lot to prove if they’re to escape the bottom part of the League One table, with games in hand to all of the six sides above them at this point.
We don’t see them climbing the table with points here, though, and we’ll now rather stick our necks out for Sunderland to snatch a point in a Draw priced at 12/5 with BetVictor. We hope to see the visitors in good shape despite an underwhelming streak and this could prove too much for Gills to handle.
However, we feel Black Cats’ records on the road are far from reinstating confidence, especially at the back. With that in mind, we expect them to find the net if they’re to snatch points and we’re backing a Yes on Both teams to score at 4/5 with bet365.
