Gibraltar vs Republic of Ireland Match Preview
Gibraltar escaped the rock-bottom of their Group 4 UEFA Nations League D with October wins over Armenia (0-1) and Liechtenstein (2-1), proving themselves a more challenging outfit over time despite comfortable losses to Armenia (2-6) and Montenegro (4-0) to follow.
Team 54 have been putting on solid displays in front of the home fans and while they come into the Saturday’s clash against Republic of Ireland as heavy underdogs, we’ll surely see Julio Ribas’ men motivated once again. We don’t really fancy their chances to make it an upset at Victoria Stadium but the visitors will be in for a challenge.
Mick McCarthy returns to the bench and he’s emphasized he will not underestimate the rivals in his first fixture back, looking for important points in a tough group also shared with Denmark, Switzerland, and Georgia. Republic of Ireland have struggled to score numbers of goals on the regular and this could be more worrying, as they look for their third win over Gibraltar in three clashes.
Boys in Green have shared the spoils in goalless draws against Denmark twice in Nations League but still crashed out of the League B with a 0-1 loss to Wales seen along the way – as well as a friendly draw against Northern Ireland (0-0). They will now need more in the final third and the long trip South feels like a good opportunity to do so.
We will still back Gibraltar to prove a tough nut to crack as we stick with Asian Handicap and Gibraltar to win +3.5, which comes at 7/10 with bet365. We feel they’ll show more than in the past two head-to-head clashes and this feels like good value.
With that in mind, we’ll also go for Under 3.5 Goals FT at 11/10 with Paddy Power. We’ve seen the Boys in Green put on solid defensive displays and we don’t see Gibraltar getting on the scoresheet, which doesn’t really promise a lot of goals on the day.
