Germany vs Netherlands Match Preview
These neighbours and old rivals meet for the fourth time in 11 months aiming to chase down Northern Ireland in the hunt for top spot in Euro 2020 qualifying Group C.
This pool has a rather unusual shape to it because Northern Ireland have raced clear due to playing all of their first four matches against the makeweights, Belarus and Estonia, and they have taken the maximum 12 points to boost their chances of reaching next summer’s finals.
The reason why the picture is not clearer is that the Netherlands contested the Nations League finals in June, finishing runners-up to Portugal, and so they have two games in hand on the Irish – but their 3-2 defeat at home to Germany has piled the pressure on the Dutch.
Germany also have a 100% record, in their case from three games, and if they can win this one in Hamburg, it would do both themselves and Northern Ireland a big favour in the quest to secure the two places available at next year’s tournament from this group.
However, all would certainly not be lost for Ronald Koeman’s men because they are guaranteed a place in the play-offs due to their Nations League exploits, in which they won a strong pool ahead of world champions France and also condemned the Germans to relegation.
Although they were held 2-2 at home by the Dutch in the Nations League, Germany will see this as more of a test they need to win and are backed to do just that – thus making amends 31 years on for their 2-1 defeat in the European Championship semi-finals at the same venue.
