Fulham vs Chelsea Match Preview
Maurizio Sarri must be glad to have seen the back of a hugely turbulent February and is expected to begin March with a routine west London derby success at Craven Cottage.
The under-pressure Italian has been on a roller-coaster ride over the last few weeks, comprising the peaks and troughs of home wins to nil against Huddersfield, Malmo and Tottenham, painful defeats to both Manchester clubs and, of course, the Carabao Cup Final controversy of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refusing to be substituted.
But Sarri appears to have ridden out the storm for now and his side have played their last 345 minutes of football without conceding a goal, the latest 90 of those with Willy Caballero between the sticks instead of the disciplined-and-dropped Kepa.
At one point long odds-on to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job, Sarri has lasted longer than Claude Puel and also his fellow Italian, Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked by Fulham on Thursday after a dismal run that has left them looking certain to be relegated.
Scott Parker has taken over until the end of the season and ironically, his first match in charge is against the club for whom he played only 28 matches after joining from Charlton Athletic for £10million in 2004 before moving on to Newcastle due to a lack of opportunities.
Opportunity has knocked now for the former England midfielder, in the sense of being able to stake his claim for the permanent Fulham job, but such has been the Cottagers’ dismal campaign that it is difficult to see anything other than another defeat for them here.
