France Women vs South Korea Women Predictions
France come into the Women’s World Cup among the favourites this year despite having never won the trophy before. Four years ago, in Canada, they reached the semi-final stage for the first time, just four years after reaching the quarter-final stage for the first time in Germany and this time, with the home advantage as the hosts of the tournament, they may feel capable of going all the way.
As the hosts, les Bleues have not needed to qualify for the tournament and so haven’t played as much competitive football as some of their opponents over the last few years, but their preparation could hardly have been much better. Corinne Diacre’s side come into the tournament on the back of five consecutive friendly victories, most of which have been comfortable, which will have contributed to the bookies pricing them at just 1/8 to win this one (William Hill).
South Korea’s national women’s side only formed as late as 1990 but they have progressed very well since then, with this being their third Women’s World Cup and in Canada they even managed to make it out of the group stages. They’ve enjoyed some runs into the latter stages of the Asian Cup in recent years too, reaching the semi-final stage of that competition on three occasions since the turn of the century.
Since qualifying for the tournament through the Asian section with relative ease, Taegeuk Nangja have struggled for form in games leading up to the tournament, losing 4-1 to Australia in the FFA Cup of Nations and failing to win any of their three pre-World Cup friendlies against Sweden and Iceland (who they played twice). Can Yoon Deok-yeo’s charges cause an upset on opening night at 20/1 with Bet365?
For us, South Korea don’t have the quality to be able to cope with a French outfit that has only improved since that semi-final defeat in Canada four years ago. The amount of goals that les Bleues have racked up in their recent friendlies has been impressive as they smashed six past Uruguay, four past Denmark and three in wins over Thailand and Japan. South Korea’s defence is not the strongest in the tournament so we’re backing France -2 @ 5/4 with Bet365.
The star turn of this French outfit is undoubtedly captain Eugenie Le Sommer. The Lyon forward smashed in 13 goals in 16 league appearances for her club this season but her record for les Bleues is even more impressive as she has racked up 74 goals in 159 caps for her country and finding the net no fewer than ten times in her last ten international appearances. The 30 year old is priced at 4/5 with Paddy Power to get on the scoresheet here.
