Bayern Munich’s interim manager Hansi Flick has the spectre of Mauricio Pochettino now hanging over him as he bids to extend his spell in charge – and victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf is a must.

Flick, 54, who played over 100 matches for Bayern in the second half of the 1980s, spent eight years up to the 2014 World Cup as Joachim Low’s assistant with the Germany team, then took a behind-the-scenes role at the national association and, this summer, became No 2 to Niko Kovac at the Allianz Arena.

When Kovac was sacked at the start of this month, Flick took over temporarily and so far has presided over decisive home wins to nil over Olympiakos in the Champions League and then Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

The Bayern board have consequently confirmed Flick will be in charge until the midwinter break begins just before Christmas while they assess their options – one of which is now Pochettino after his sacking by Tottenham, and he looks to be a very live contender.

However, if Flick can keep winning matches, he will make a compelling case to be kept on at least until the end of the season and with Fortuna Dusseldorf down in 13th position in the table and not the most prolific goalscorers at home, this is a game in which Bayern can afford to feel confident.

It would be no surprise to see the German champions really move through the gears now and stamp their authority on the Bundesliga as they seek an eighth consecutive title, and a comfortable success is expected to come their way here.
