Grimsby delayed Forest Green’s elevation to the Football League in 2016, but only by 12 months and now it’s the Gloucestershire club who are targeting promotion to the next level.

The Mariners won the 2015-16 National League play-off final 3-1 against Forest Green, who triumphed in the equivalent match at Wembley the following season and so both clubs are now competing in English football’s fourth tier.

Last term, Forest Green only just avoided immediate relegation, but this season they have improved considerably and can cement their place in the play-off zone by winning this game.

Grimsby are unlikely to change division this time around, although if anything they need to look over their shoulder towards the drop zone because Macclesfield are improving quickly under Sol Campbell and closing on the teams above them.

The obvious bet here is Forest Green to win because they are having much the better campaign and Grimsby have lost their last four matches.
