Fleetwood Town vs Sunderland Match Preview
Sunderland must win at Fleetwood if they are to retain any chance of being automatically promoted from League One when the regular season finishes at the weekend.
The Black Cats are fourth in the table going into this game in hand and whatever happens at Highbury on Tuesday, the only way they can go directly up to the Championship is if both of the top two, Luton and Barnsley, lose their last matches on Saturday.
Even then, Sunderland have to beat Fleetwood and then relegation-threatened Southend away, while also overcoming a goal difference deficit of seven to Barnsley, plus there is the additional barrier of Portsmouth also above them in third position with a game in hand too.
So, essentially, it’s looking like the play-offs for Jack Ross’ side, who could be left to rue too many draws since Christmas and if they do go into overtime in terms of deciding the third promotion place, it will be tough up against two other teams finishing the season strongly.
Fleetwood, meanwhile, are certain to end up in the top half of the table but they have gone five matches without a victory.
It’s a similar story to Sunderland for Joey Barton’s side in that they have also had too many draws this term, and given the Wearsiders’ away record (see stats above) a low-scoring stalemate looks a likely outcome here.
