Sampdoria’s strong form over the last couple of months indicates they are a good bet to gain some reward on their trip to Fiorentina, whose odds look too short.

The Genoa club went into the weekend seventh in the Serie A table, three points and places above Fiorentina who would leapfrog them on the head-to-head rule with a victory here.

The bookmakers certainly rate the Viola’s prospects highly of doing just that, for they are comfortably odds-on to win – but that looks to be doing Sampdoria a disservice.

Marco Giampaolo’s visitors to Florence have only lost to Italy’s dominant team, Juventus, since the November international break apart from last weekend’s Coppa Italia tie against AC Milan in which they went down in extra time.

Admittedly Sampdoria have been doing most of their winning at home, but they drew away to fourth-placed Lazio last month and have won at Empoli since then to show they are no mugs on the road.

Fiorentina’s latest home game resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Parma and although they have been solid defensively of late, Stefano Pioli’s team do not score enough goals to suggest they should be lumped on with confidence at a short price here.
