Zenit St Petersburg are hot favourites to qualify from this tie despite losing their last three matches and should be a real handful for a Fenerbahce side enduring a poor domestic campaign.

Fenerbahce’s appointment of Phillip Cocu last summer proved to be a disaster, for the Dutchman who led PSV Eindhoven to three Eredivisie titles was sacked after only 15 games in charge and three victories.

Things have picked up for the Yellow Canaries under Ersun Yanal since then, but they are still only in mid-table of the Turkish Super Lig.

In contrast, Zenit are setting the pace in Russia, one point ahead of FK Krasnodar when the season resumes at the beginning of March, even though they were beaten twice in a row just before the winter shutdown and also in their last Europa League group match.

However, the latter did not matter because Sergei Semak’s side had already done enough to finish top of the table having been undefeated in their previous five games.

Lack of recent competitive match practice could be a concern for Zenit, but they have played six friendly games since January 22 including three at a four-cornered tournament in Qatar featuring a trio of other Russian clubs.

Home advantage for Fenerbahce here should be something of a leveller, so although Zenit look the better team on paper they may have to settle for a share of the spoils before completing the job in St Petersburg.
