Marco Silva was unable to get the better of his former club Watford last term and it could be the same again when they renew hostilities at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Although Luton will always be Watford’s biggest rivals, Everton are not a million miles behind these days because of the way they turned Silva’s head when they were seeking a manager two seasons ago – prompting the Hornets to sack him as it affected morale – and for then luring star man Richarlison to Merseyside after appointing the Portuguese coach.
Relations between the clubs will have been done no favours this summer either when Everton were rejected with a bid for Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Both teams are seeking their first goal of the campaign and Watford, who are normally strong starters, were probably shell-shocked to suffer a 3-0 opening-day defeat at home to Brighton.
Everton, meanwhile, were held to a 0-0 draw away to another club with whom they were involved in summer transfer business, Crystal Palace, in which Morgan Schneiderlin became the first player to be sent off in the 2019-20 edition of the Premier League.
Despite their initial setback, Watford look to be a more settled side than Everton, who are trying to bed in their new signings, and after denying Silva a victory last season the value may well be with Javi Gracia’s men to again thwart their former boss.
