Everton vs Manchester City Match Preview
Everton’s strong home form deserted them last week and their manager Marco Silva is likely to find himself under increasing pressure following another defeat against Manchester City.
Silva has never been universally hailed as the right man for Everton but having ended last season strongly, and seen the club spend big on new players in the summer, he has presided over what can only be classed as a disappointing start to this campaign.
The Toffees had been fending off some of the critics by winning their home games, but a 2-0 loss to Sheffield United at Goodison Park last Saturday was exactly the sort of result to attract lots of unwelcome comments from the media – and Everton supporters too, come to that.
So this is the sort of fixture that could heavily influence the future of the current favourite in the Premier League Sack Race market – beat Manchester City and then Silva will be flavour of the month, lose heavily and the calls will grow louder for him to be replaced.
The worry for the Portuguese coach is that City have bounced back in style from their shock defeat at Norwich a fortnight ago, winning their three subsequent games, all in different competitions, by a 14-0 aggregate, including 8-0 against Watford in the Premier League.
A hallmark of those victories was early goals with 10 of them scored in the first half and we can see City putting this one to bed before half-time and then merely seeing it out ahead of their Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday – and such a scenario would not be good news for Silva.
