Everton vs Chelsea Match Preview
Everton need a response after last weekend’s dramatic collapse at Newcastle and their fans will demand a positive performance against Chelsea.
The Toffees were on course for an excellent win when leading 2-0 approaching the final quarter of their match on Tyneside, but turned victory into defeat as they went down 3-2.
Results like that do nothing to ease the pressure on manager Marco Silva, who received an FA charge for confronting the officials at the end of the game in his belief that the winning goal had been offside.
The outburst illustrated the stress Silva is feeling after a run of only four league wins in 17 games and there is a growing belief in some quarters that he is not the right man for the job.
But the recent 0-0 home draw in the Merseyside derby showed what Everton can achieve when they put their mind to it, and they also held Chelsea to a goalless stalemate at Stamford Bridge in November.
Chelsea, meanwhile, needed a last-gasp equaliser to avoid defeat at home to Wolves last weekend and visit Goodison Park just three days after their Europa League fixture in Kiev.
The Blues have a chance to boost their top-four hopes as their three closest rivals in the table are not in league action this weekend, but Everton desperately need a lift of their own and are backed to collect a point at least.
