Estonia vs Northern Ireland Match Preview
Northern Ireland need to improve upon their dismal recent goalscoring form away from home if they are to maintain their 100% winning start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.
The first day of September 2017 was the last time Michael O’Neill’s side found the net on their travels, subsequently drawing a blank in three friendlies, two World Cup qualifiers and two UEFA Nations League matches.
As a result, Northern Ireland were relegated from tier two to three in the Nations League, but they have made the ideal start to their bid to reach a second consecutive European Championship finals having got through to the knockout stage in France three years ago.
Home victories over Belarus and Estonia have put the Irish top of Group C, and they need to make hay while they can because much more difficult tasks lie ahead against the two favourites, Germany and the Netherlands, in the autumn.
Estonia, meanwhile, will probably admit they are making up the numbers in this pool and they have already suffered a 2-0 defeat to Northern Ireland in Belfast where second-half goals from Niall McGinn and Steven Davis (penalty) made the difference.
It may not be quite as decisive for the Irish this time, but they are still expected to edge a narrow success that at least would put further daylight between themselves and the Netherlands, who are in Nations League finals action instead during this international break.
