Espanyol vs Wolves Match Preview
Wolves have done the hard work in this tie, brilliantly winning the first leg 4-0, and their manager Nuno Espirito Santo may be able to rest some players for the trip to Spain.
Diogo Jota scored a superb hat-trick at Molineux, further enhancing his burgeoning reputation, while his Portuguese compatriot Ruben Neves also struck to put Wolves out of sight as these clubs strive to reach the Europa League’s last 16.
With his team all but through to the next round, Nuno could afford to leave a few of his stars back at base for he only has a small squad and Sunday’s trip to Tottenham will be vital in the chase for a top four or five Premier League place that could secure Champions League football for 2020-21.
For Espanyol, there are no such lofty ambitions. They merely want to stay in La Liga Primera Division, being bottom of the table and five points from safety after another damaging defeat at the weekend, 2-1 against Valladolid.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Barcelona-based club on Sunday when they host Atletico Madrid, but if there is any encouragement in terms of this match and the next one it’s that Espanyol are unbeaten in their last four home games.
Whether Abelardo Fernandez’s side extend that run on Thursday is pretty much academic with regard to who advances from this tie and such was Wolves’ dominance last week that even without a full-strength line-up, they may well be good enough to win again.
