England Women vs Cameroon Women Predictions
England Women are hoping to get their hands on some major silverware for the first time this summer. Having never made it as far as the final of either the World Cup or the European Championships, history is not on the Lionesses’ side, but this current crop of players is among the most capable in their history and with the quality they have in players like Nikita Parris and Steph Houghton, this could be the year to end that wait for a first major trophy.
Although they weren’t spectacular in the group stages, Phil Neville’s side did manage to finish top of their group with maximum points. A narrow victory over neighbours Scotland was followed up with wins and clean sheets against both Argentina and Japan to set up this second round tie against Cameroon, which they are expected to win handsomely – hence odds of 1/8 with 888sport.
Cameroon Women are also yet to get their hands on any major silverware. They remain one of the better teams in Africa, having reached the African Cup of Nations final four in the last nine tournaments, but are yet to lift the trophy. Les Lions Indomptables have started to improve on the world stage as well, qualifying for the last two World Cups and making it through to the Round of 16 on both occasions.
Like last time however, their run is expected to end at this stage. Alain Djeumfa’s charges were one of two lucky teams to make it through as one of the teams to finish third as they picked up just one win in the group stages, against New Zealand in their final game. That dramatic victory came on the back of defeats to Canada and the Netherlands and we think they’ll struggle against the stronger opposition again here and so do the bookies, with PaddyPower offering odds of 20/1.
We don’t think it’ll be as clear-cut as most of the bookmakers seem to think though. The African outfit managed to keep the margin of victory to one goal against Canada and England haven’t exactly been convincing in the group stages, only winning by one goal against both Scotland and Argentina before a 2-0 victory against Japan in their final game. We’re backing the Lionesses to win by just one goal here too at 3/1 with PaddyPower.
Given that we’re expecting a tighter game than the bookmakers appear to be anticipating it also makes sense to back a low-scoring clash. All three of the group stage games involving this England outfit saw less than four goals scored, whilst the Under 3.5 goals bet also came in twice in Cameroon’s three group stage fixtures. That’s why we’re backing under 3.5 goals again here at odds of 4/6 with Bet365.
