England vs Montenegro Match Preview

England will want to wrap up qualification for Euro 2020 on Thursday with the minimum of fuss – as they would rather avoid travelling to Kosovo needing to win.

A victory at home to Montenegro, which is fully anticipated, would ensure the Three Lions of a place at next summer’s tournament, not that it is really in any doubt regardless.

But it will be a relief for Gareth Southgate and his squad to get the job done without the worrying, albeit unlikely, scenario of facing Kosovo on Sunday with three points required to make it mission accomplished in a Group A campaign in which England have been dominant.

The one blip was last month’s 2-1 defeat to their closest pursuers the Czech Republic, but otherwise Southgate’s side have been scoring goals for fun with an average of five in each of their five wins, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling bagging eight apiece in the group.

Montenegro have regressed markedly from the team that threatened to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and the goals have completely dried up since their captain and talisman, former Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic, has been sidelined due to injury.

However, Fatos Beciraj and Stefan Mugosa are capable of finding the back of the net and with England having conceded three goals to Kosovo in their last home match, there could be a consolation here for Montenegro – but that is surely all it would be.
