Empoli are involved in what looks a four-club battle to avoid the final relegation place in Serie A, but their hopes of avoiding the drop are unlikely to improve against Napoli.
Chievo and Frosinone appear certain to go down and they look set to be joined by, in current order of likelihood, either Empoli, Bologna, Udinese or SPAL.
With nine matches remaining, the situation is not yet critical for Empoli because they and the trio directly above them are covered by only four points, and after this midweek fixture the club from near Florence do not have the most daunting of run-ins.
But this is a match in which the Blues will do very well to avoid defeat because Napoli, who look sure to finish second in the table, are maintaining a high level of form and they have scored four goals in each of their latest back-to-back wins over Udinese and away to Roma.
After a lean spell by his high standards, Belgium forward Dries Mertens is back on the goals trail after netting in both of those two victories. He has a strong record against Empoli too and is backed to score again in a routine success for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
