St Mirren gained a vital win on Monday and are backed to give themselves a chance of avoiding the Scottish Premiership relegation play-off by securing another victory at Dundee.

The Buddies may just be timing their run perfectly to get out of trouble as their form has improved considerably over the past couple of months, losing only one of their last seven games thanks largely to a better defensive record.

In the quest to avoid a two-legged tie against a team from the Championship with a Premiership place for next season at stake, St Mirren knew they had to beat Hamilton on Monday and they did so 2-0 with goals from Kyle McAllister and Kyle Magennis.

Saints’ fate is still out of their hands because they need to gain more points than Hamilton in Saturday’s final round of matches in the bottom half of the table to be sure of staying up, but their adversaries arguably have a tougher fixture at home to in-form St Johnstone.

Dundee are already down and last weekend they sacked manager Jim McIntyre, with James McPake taking over on a temporary basis while the club sifts through the deluge of applications after advertising the job on their official website.

The Dark Blues have collected a measly seven points from a possible 54 at home this term and the momentum has to be with St Mirren to potentially secure themselves another campaign in the top division – depending, of course, on what happens at Hamilton.
