Denmark can still make it through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Under 21 Championships but it will take something special at this stage. The three group winners all go through to the final four stage alongside the team that finishes second but with the best record and given that two teams in Group C already have six points, it will be difficult for Rode Hvide to finish with the best return of the teams finishing second in their groups.
Both of the Scandinavian sides matches so far have ended 3-1. Firstly, Niels Frederiksen’s side went down to that scoreline by a Germany side that are the holders of the competition and among the favourites to win it once again but they bounced back in perfect fashion in their second fixture to overcome Austria at the Dacia Arena in Udine. Serbia’s Under 21s are officially recognised by both FIFA and UEFA as the direct successors of both the Yugoslavian Under 21 side and the Serbia and Montenegro Under 21 sides of past. As such, their record in this particular competition makes for impressive reading, with the team having won the trophy on one occasion back in 1978 and having reached the semi-final stage at least a further six times since then.
This time around though it’s been a difficult campaign for the Young Eagles. A 0-2 defeat to Austria set the tone for what has been a difficult group stage and that was only followed up in rather embarrassing fashion as Goran Dorovic’s team were then on the wrong end of a 6-1 thrashing from Germany.
