DC United vs Atlanta United Match Preview
Atlanta United begin the defence of their MLS Cup title with a new manager, Frank de Boer, up against Wayne Rooney’s DC United side – who will have their sights set on dethroning them.
In only their second ever MLS campaign, Atlanta looked the best team in either Conference for most of the season and so it ultimately proved as they won the overall final 2-0 against Portland Timbers under former Barcelona head coach Gerardo Martino.
He has now moved on to take over the Mexico national team, but in has come De Boer who will be hoping to make much more of a success of this job than he did at Crystal Palace.
Although the Georgia-based club sold playmaker Miguel Almiron to Newcastle United in January for a fee of £21million, they still have last year’s 31-goal MLS top scorer Josef Martinez and signed Paul Pogba’s brother, defender Florentin.
In terms of the Almiron replacement, Atlanta have spent much of his fee on Pity Martinez from River Plate and his impact will be keenly anticipated.
As for DC United, they improved greatly after Rooney’s arrival last summer and qualified for the post-season before losing in the opening round on penalties to Columbus Crew.
Their best-known new signing is former Burnley and Wigan midfielder Chris McCann from, ironically, Atlanta United, but if DC are to challenge for top honours they will need Rooney firing on all cylinders, not getting into the off-field scrapes that he has in the last few months.
With their pre-season results having been strong, Atlanta are fancied to show they will be no less of a force under De Boer by getting their season off to a flyer.
